The words “DIPTI Mission” translates to the “Mission of Light and Hope”.

DIPTI Mission is a charitable non-profit organization founded by Mrs.P.B.Sircar (a Bengali widow who, because of the great need, sought to rescue young women who were unwed mothers, living in their respective tribal communities and very often subject to a miserable and lonely life) in the year 1925 at Sahibganj, in North Bihar, India. Mr. & Mrs. D. Rajkumar have been heading the work since 1972.

The orphanage was established by Raj & Meena Kumar and started by Raj bringing home 2 orphaned boys from the Maltos tribe. They were found wandering in the jungle after being rejected by the tribe when their parents had died. The Maltos are an extremely poor hill tribe, who are currently at risk of becoming extinct due to the high mortality rate, the average age is 45 years.

Other orphans are from the Santals, also an extremely poor tribe who live on the plains of Sahibganj, their average life span is 65 years.

At its peak (during the early 1980’s) DIPTI Mission provided care for 500 orphans. There are currently 125 orphans ranging in age from 6 months to 15 years (of this there are 67 boys and 58 girls). The orphanage aims to provide Residential child care, a medical unit, a non formal education center and a vocational training unit. The aim of the mission is to provide an education and a training facility to allow the orphans to return to their tribes or establish their lives in the Bihar area.

In addition to providing for the orphans of these tribes the DIPTI Mission has established a number of one-meal programmes in the surrounding areas to support a meal a day for the children of poor families.

Currently DIPTI Mission is supporting the following one-meal programmes:

Dumka: 58 children are provided with a non formal education and one hot meal a day following classes.
Haripur: 45 children are provided with a hot meal at this small hamlet (in the hills of Dumka), the children are also taught songs and rhymes.
Jirwabadi: 250 children (per quarter) are provided with a hot meal . This area is on the outskirts of Sahibganj and has a population of extremely poor low caste hindus.
